The downtown YMCA celebrated its official grand reopening last week after completing a series of extensive renovations The YMCA has been upgrading large portions of its facility since September of 2005. A $300,000 capital donation made by John Wood, a board member at the Downtown YMCA, helped get the project under way.
Members and visitors to the facility will now be able to enjoy a new lobby area, group exercise room, cross-training facility and free weight room. The revamped facilities also boast new cardiovascular and string training machines with personal TV monitors. The YMCA hopes that the new facilities will offer better opportunities to current members as well as help to invite new ones.
“Having a fresh new look is like having a fresh new start and our members just love it. It’s just more aesthetically appealing and friendly,” said Daniel Duncan, executive director of the Downtown YMCA.
YMCA members are not the only ones to benefit from the new facilities. The Monarch School and City Tree Elementary will be able use the new facilities for athletic programs. An urban church congregation will also meet in the YMCA’s new group exercise room.
The new and improved YMCA is located at 500 West Broadway, suite B, and is open from 5:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. For more information, visit www.ymca.org.
