Downtown in motion: County supervisor, District 4 Candidate Forum

By Dora McCann Guerreiro | East Village Biz News

On Tuesday, Nov. 6, registered voters will cast their ballot in the midterm elections and specifically in San Diego’s 4th District race, voters will select their new County Board of Supervisors representative. The East Village Association (EVA) and the East Village Residents Group (EVRG) invite you to the Oct. 11 Downtown County Supervisor, District 4 Candidate Forum between candidate Bonnie Dumanis (bonnieforsupervisor.com) and candidate Nathan Fletcher (nathanfletcher.com), from 5–6 p.m. at the San Diego Central Library’s Neil Morgan Auditorium (330 Park Blvd., San Diego, CA 92101), moderated by Lisa Halverstadt, Voice of San Diego reporter. This event is free and open to the public. By way of background of the two mentioned contenders, the winning candidate will succeed incumbent Republican Supervisor Ron Roberts, who has held the seat since 1994 and is now termed-out due to a 2010 voter-approved term limit rule.

But how does this highly anticipated County Board of Supervisors race affect you as a voter?

Serving as the local government for all unincorporated areas, the San Diego County government also provides election and voter registration, law enforcement, jails, vital records, property taxes, tax collection, and public health and social services. Governed by an elected five-member Board of Supervisors, the county is additionally managed by several other elected offices and officers including the District Attorney, Sheriff, Assessor/Recorder/Country Clerk, Treasurer/Tax Collector and other country departments overseen by the Chief Administrative Officer. With nearly a $6 billion annual budget, the county is guided by the strategic initiatives of: healthy families, safe communities, sustainable environment, and operational excellence. More information can be found at sandiegocounty.gov.

You may be wondering: How do I know if I’m a District 4 voter?

Considered to be the most ethnically diverse district in San Diego County, District 4 serves approximately 630,000 residents. The 4th Supervisorial District spans 100 square miles, extending north to UC San Diego, west to the Pacific Ocean, east to Encanto and south to Paradise Hills; and includes the neighborhoods of Adams North, Alta Vista, Bay Ho, Bay Park, Birdland, Castle, Cherokee Point, Chollas Creek, City Heights, Clairemont Mesa, Colina Del Sol, Corridor, Cortez, Crown Point, East Village, El Cerrito, Emerald Hills, Encanto, Fairmount Park, Fairmount Village, Golden Hill, Hillcrest, Jamacha Lomita, Kearny Mesa, Kensington, La Jolla, Linda Vista, Little Italy, Loma Portal, Middletown, Midway, Mission Beach, Mission Hills, Mission Valley, Morena, Normal Heights, North Park, Oak Park, Ocean Beach, Pacific Beach, Park West, Redwood Village, Serra Mesa, Skyline, South Park, Swan Canyon, Talmadge Park, University Heights, Valencia Park, Webster and the greater Downtown San Diego area.

Come join for a healthy dialogue designed to discuss candidate strategies for an enhanced quality of community and civic engagement. The forum will include a 5-minute candidate introduction, 45 minutes for prepared questions and answers, and the remainder of time for audience questions and answers. The debate will explore each candidate’s envisioned plan to further the development of our Downtown community; and how the candidates see mental and behavioral health programming and its direct impact on a clean and safe Downtown environment. Representing the future of San Diego’s urban growth, a Downtown area once known for its historic warehouse and industrial, manufacturing zones has now given way to trendy residential developments, vibrant nightlife and entertainment, and an entrepreneurial spirit brought upon by start-ups, home-based business, and world class educational facilities. Come learn how our next representation will protect and promote Downtown’s potential.

The EVA and EVRG do not endorse either candidate and want to remind the public that this is an open, free event — but as space may be limited and there will be a hard 6 p.m. stop time, please plan your evening accordingly. For more information on the EVA and community events, please visit eastvillagesandiego.com.
