OCEAN BEACH — Dr. Edithann Graham DMD, MS, and Dr. Michelle Yamada DDS will partner to take a bite out of childhood Halloween tooth decay on Monday, Nov. 1. Trick-or-treaters can bring their excess candy to the Halloween Candy Buyback event at the Family Wellness Center in Ocean Beach and receive $1 per pound. Graham encourages children to pick out a few of their favorite treats to savor Halloween night, and maybe even keep a few more for later in the week. But she said she is happy to trade the rest for cash. The candy will be shipped overseas to American troops who could use a treat or two. Experts say global consumption for children increases by about 2 percent annually and currently sits at 50 million tons per year, which means parents need to be very watchful, now more than ever before. Too much candy can lead to hyperactivity and weight gain, as well as cavities or worse. In some cases, the wrong types of candy can also lead to broken teeth and damaged braces, according to dentistry experts. Peninsula children are encouraged to dress up one more time and bring their unopened candy (even leftover candy for adult hosts who didn’t have as many trick-or-treaters as they thought they would) to the Family Wellness Center, located at 1806 Cable St., on Monday, Nov. 1 between 3:30 and 6 p.m. Children will have an opportunity to write cards to U.S. troops, prizes will be raffled off, childhood safety kits will be passed out and a face painter will be on hand to participate in the fun. For more information, call (619) 226-4784.
