Day, Mickelson among field at 63rd Farmers Open tourney

The 63rd annual Farmers Insurance Open golf tourney, part of the PGA tour’s so-called West Coast Swing, will run Jan. 28 to 31 at Torrey Pines Golf Course, with a $6.5 million purse at stake among a field of 140 golfers. Approximately 850 volunteers provide nearly 28,000 hours of service to the prestigious tournament, which supports La Jolla’s Century Club, a charity organization whose proceeds go to The Monarch School and several youth programs. The tournament has generated more than $32 million for San Diego-area charities since its inception in 1968. Australian Jason Day, the tournament winner in 2015, will return to the competition. San Diego native Phil Mickelson, who won the tournament in 1993, 2000 and 2001, is among the participants. Notably absent is Tiger Woods, winner of a record seven Farmers Opens. Woods last won the tournament in 2013 and withdrew last year due to an injury. Torrey Pines will be closed Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 25 and 26. The Zurich Pro-Am tourney will precede the Farmers competition, on Jan. 27. The course is located at 11480 North Torrey Pines Road in La Jolla. Gates open on the 28th at 7 a.m. For more, call (858) 581-7171.
