DAR Letitia Coxe Shelby chapter participates in wreath ceremony

The Daughters of the American Revolution Letitia Coxe Shelby chapter participated in Wreaths Across America in December at Greenwood Memorial Park.

Following an opening ceremony that included the presentation of colors by the San Diego Chapter of the Buffalo Soldiers, Pledge of Allegiance by Girl Scout Troop 6923 and remarks from guest speaker Rev. Dr. John E. Warren, chapter members, more than 100 ROTC troops from schools all over San Diego County and other volunteers placed more than 2,500 wreaths on Veteran graves throughout the cemetery including those of 5 Medal of Honor recipients.

The Letitia Coxe Shelby DAR chapter is proud to have doubled the number of wreaths donated from last year.

Each veteran’s wreath is comprised of 10 balsam bouquets these stand for 10 special qualities that veteran’s embody.

They are:

1. Their FAITH in God.

2. Their LOVE for each other.

3. Their STRENGTH work ethic & character

4. Their HONESTY

5. Their HUMILITY selflessness & modesty

6. Their AMBITIONS & aspirations

7. Their OPTIMISM for America

8. Their CONCERN for the future

9. Their PRIDE in their duties

10. Their HOPES & DREAMS That didn’t always come true. But left them with no regrets.

The Evergreen Balsam signifies Longevity, the Red Bow = Great Sacrifice, the Forest Scent = Purity & Simplicity and the Circular Shape = Eternity.

As part of the event the chapter also hosted a pinning of Vietnam Veterans ceremony. Presenting Vietnam Veterans with a pin commemorating and thanking them for their service.

Upcoming chapter events include wreath recycling at Miramar National Cemetery Saturday, Jan 7. The balsam from the wreaths will be removed from the wire frame the wire will then be recycled.

The next chapter meeting will be Friday, Jan. 13 and is open to the public.
