Lifeguards have to wait a little longer to move into a new $1.85 million station at La Jolla Cove, as the project has been delayed yet again.
The City of San Diego Public Works Department said the contractor, APR Construction, incorrectly installed an accessibility ramp and that the work must now be redone at the contractor’s expense.
“I don’t know what’s going on,” said Duane Thompson, one of the many visitors who feel the construction zone is an eyesore. “I don’t know why they don’t get it done.” Construction on the tower started in February of 2014 and was supposed to be completed by December of that year. Problems pushed back the finish date to May of this year and then again to the summer.
The city says the project will be completed by mid-September.
Lifeguards say the new tower will give them a better view of the cove and provide better protection.
“We’re super-excited about it. It’s a great new tower. We’re looking forward to moving in,” said Sgt. Travis Gleason of San Diego Lifeguards.
