Couture fashion show was a Global affair

The Globe Guilders and Neiman Marcus presented “Celebrating Couture” on Tuesday, Aug. 5 at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina. The luncheon and fashion show began with a Champagne reception and silent auction. Maria Stanley chaired the event. Bonnie Wright and Joan Montenegro were co-chairs, while Sheryl White was the honorary chair. This show presented the designs of Indian designer Naeem Khan. Naeem is a third-generation designer, as his father and grandfather designed for the Royal Family in India. He apprenticed with American designer Halston and now designs for celebrities here in the United States. The runway showed off Khan’s Resort 2009 Collection. The stunning designs were created with clean silhouettes that show off luxurious textiles. The models’ hair and make-up were very subdued to emphasize the fabulous fabrics that included intricate beading and embroidered designs. The crowd cried “Ooh-la-la” when a peacock-feathered outfit came down the runway. At the end of the fashion show, Naeem was given a standing ovation for these gorgeous creations. His creations are carried at Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue and other upscale stores. The proceeds for the afternoon went to the Globe Guilders. This fascinating book, “Adrian: Silver Screen to Custom Label,” was written by Christian Esquevin, director of the Coronado Public Library. Christian developed his interest from his great-aunt, who was head cutter-fitter at the RKO Studio Wardrobe Department in the 1930s. Over his lifetime, he has become a collector of classical Hollywood costume design drawings and historian of film costume design. Adrian, a costume designer at MGM in the 1930s, worked with all the big female stars, such as Greta Garbo, Jean Harlow and Katharine Hepburn. He designed Joan Crawford’s signature oversize padded shoulder look and Dorothy’s ruby slippers for “The Wizard of Oz.” This book covers the Golden Age of Hollywood and includes information on a decade of Adrian Ltd., his private label, and his marriage to actress Janet Gaynor. During this glamorous era, Adrian became an exceptional costume designer who designed more than 200 films. For a copy of this book about this awe-inspiring designer and his prolific career, visit the bookstore at the San Diego Historic Society in Balboa Park or call (619) 232-6203, ext. 113. The Old Masters live The Timken Museum of Art joined with FCC to present an evening of fine art and fashion on Saturday, Aug. 9. This event was called “The Art of Fashion: Tableaux de Mode.” Ten students from Fashion Careers College designed a garment inspired by one of the Timken’s collection of Old Masters paintings. Each student was given a different painting to use as inspiration for their design. Patricia O’Connor, president and founder of FCC, was on hand to greet the guests. The honorary chair was international fashion designer Zandra Rhodes. Pat O’Connor is a docent of the Timken Museum, which showcases collections of European and American art. This museum is considered one of the finest small museums in the world and currently houses 75 works of art, including paintings, sculpture and icons. The crowd surrounded by all these beautiful pieces of art viewed the models standing in front of their artwork on cubes. The models took turns showing off each creative design in front of their designated work of art. As the evening progressed, these interpretations of art were informally modeled throughout the crowd. This first-time evening was very successful and will become an annual event. For more information about the Timken Museum, visit www.timkenmuseum.org.
