Local scholastic baseball teams look to play strong in the final week or two of the regular season as they prepare for CIFs.
At La Jolla Country Day School, the Torreys split their contests last week for head coach John Edman.
In an 8-2 win over The Bishop’s School, LJCD (14-13, 4-3) used a strong pitching performance from junior Greg Wisenberg to score the win. Kyle Reese provided the offense, going 3-for-5 on the day.
In a 3-1 loss to Francis Parker, Zack Kusnir pitched well but the Torreys managed only one run. Wisenberg had two hits, as did sophomore John Kennedy.
Meantime, La Jolla High also split a pair of games last week for head coach Gary Frank. La Jolla came into this week at 19-8, 6-4 in Western League play.
In a 10-7 eight-inning loss to Coronado, La Jolla was unable to hold on to two different three-run leads early in the game and then rallied to tie the game at 7-7 and send it to extra innings.
Robert Sprong and Blake Shelburne pitched well in relief as they combined for five innings and no earned runs. Unfortunately, five defensive errors led to seven unearned runs and a tough league loss for the Vikings. Jack Peterson, Jimmy Filter, Trent Jemmett and Sprong all had two hits in a losing cause.
La Jolla bounced back with an 8-0 victory over Madison to end the week. Patrick Christensen pitched six innings, allowing only two hits to earn his seventh victory of the season.
Jemmett was the offensive star, collecting a single, double and triple, scoring two runs and driving in three. Peter Sefton drove in three runs and stole a base.
“We are in a great position, and it’s a very exciting time for La Jolla baseball,” Frank commented. “The guys have worked very hard for the past three months, and it’s paying off on the field. We have a great chance to make history and win the fourth league championship in school history and the first one in 15 years.”
At The Bishop’s School, the Knights dropped a pair of contests last week.
Following an 8-2 loss to La Jolla Country Day School, Bishop’s fell by a 12-11 score to Horizon. In that loss, Makoto Chino went 3-for-3 with four RBIs.
