Councilmember Campbell to hold ‘State of the District’ event

On Thursday, Jan, 30, Councilmember Jennifer Campbell will be hosting her first “State of the District” event at 5:30 p.m. at Liberty Station Convention Center, 2600 Laning Road. This event will honor the “Neighbor of the Year” and “Small Business of the Year” for District 2’s seven communities with the winners nominated by their neighbors. This event will be hosted in partnership with Point Loma Nazarene University and will feature remarks by Campbell, tabling by local nonprofits, and performances by local students.
“This event is all about celebrating the wonderful communities of District 2,” Campbell said. “The toughest part of an event like this is just picking one person and one business from each neighborhood to honor, especially with all the great nominations that came from our residents.”
After sifting through dozens of nominations, some of the “Neighbor” and “Small Business” winners include: • Marshall Picard, A 101-year old World War II veteran and Midway resident that helps set up and serve food at his senior living community. • Emily Cottrell, Clairemont resident and President of the Ruby-award-winning Clairemont Coalition on Homelessness, which supports best-practice solutions to end homelessness. • Olive Bakery, a Mission Beach restaurant that serves as a hub for local community groups and provides baked goods for local events like the Point in Time Count. • Randall’s Sandals, a Pacific Beach shop that hosts beach clean-ups and encourages environmentally responsible shopping through discounts for donations.
In total 14 awards will be presented. The “State of the District” will also feature light refreshments provided by local restaurants.
San Diego’s Council District 2 includes the communities of Bay Ho/Bay Park/Morena, Midway/North Bay, Mission Bay, Mission Beach, Ocean Beach, Pacific Beach, and Point Loma.
