Concerts shake it up for summer

La Jolla Concerts by the Sea, a nonprofit organization that has produced free concerts at La Jolla Cove for the past 24 years, is presenting another stellar summer lineup.
From 2 to 4 p.m. every Sunday through Sept. 2, local bands ranging from country to swing and jazz will perform under the sun on the Cove’s expansive lawn. Concessions and raffle tickets will be on sale and each performance is individually sponsored by 11 local and national companies, according to Shirley Mae Davis, president of La Jolla Concerts by the Sea.
“It’s the smiles on the faces of the people in the park each Sunday that keep me going,” Davis said. “When I see the people having such a good time, that’s what makes it worthwhile.”
The first performance, an oldies band called the MarDels, drew about 1,500 people, according to Davis, who mentioned that the organization usually provides a dance floor, which always fills up quickly.
Davis, who has been involved with the organization since its inception 24 years ago and has served as its president the last four, sits on a nine-person board of volunteers that works closely with sponsors and local San Diego-based bands each year to organize the event, she said.
The next performances include the swing band Big Time Operator on Sunday, July 1, and country/western music by Working Cowboy Band Sunday, July 8.
For more information or the complete lineup, visit www.ljconcertsbythesea.org or contact Davis, (858) 459-4053.
