The Concert Across America to End Gun Violence is an event that will see dozens of venues across the U.S. stage events to raise awareness of the problem of gun violence. The San Diego concert will take place 5 p.m. Sept. 25 with an impressive lineup set to include composer Josh Weinstein, singer song-writers Kimm Rogers and Hayden Clark, rockers The League of Liars, plus special guests. All are superb performers, particularly Weinstein, a terrific pianist and showman, but the nod here goes to Rogers, a long revered tunesmith who has been releasing albums full of pop, rock and folk gems since 1990. Local musical institutions, The Siers Brothers perform at Tio Leo’s on Sept. 30. The band’s roots go back to the 1970s with their longevity down to one fact – they are crowd pleasers. Their set is big on songs that are guaranteed floor fillers, such as “Sweet Caroline,” “Brick House,” and “Mustang Sally,” tunes sure to get even the most jaded party goer up on their feet. Using a revolving cast of players, Steve and Mark Siers put on an irreverent show that’s been honed by decades of playing bars and celebrations. The annual Pacific BeachFest, taking place on Oct. 1, will have plenty of great music from the likes of Psydecar on their main stage, but one of the highlights every year is the appearance by the acclaimed musical students of Mission Bay High School. This time out, two of the school’s bands will perform under the direction of musical director J.P. Balmat; the Latin sounds of The Mambo Orchestra at 3:40 and the classic New Orleans-styled tunes of The Preservationists at 4:10. Music aficionados will love every second of these youths performances, part of one of the city’s best music programs. One of the greatest musicals of all time, “West Side Story,” comes to Dizzy’s on Oct. 1. An all-star cast will join together in a wonderful new Latin jazz interpretation of the acclaimed Broadway play and movie, recasting the love story to now be between Jamie Shadowlight’s violin and Gilbert Castellanos’ trumpet, with fellow musicians set to include virtuoso pianist Mikan Zlatkovic, bassist Will Lyle, percussionist Monette Marino and drummer Kevin Higuchi. Jazz fans won’t want to miss a chance to hear these classic songs, including “America” and “I Feel Pretty,” performed by some of San Diego’s finest musicians. West Side Story Goes Latin Jazz: Saturday, Oct. 1, at Dizzy’s, 4275 Mission Bay Drive. 8 p.m. $20. www.dizzysjazz.com. Smooth jazz and modern R&B fans won’t want to miss saxophonist Jazmin Ghent at Humphrey’s Backstage Live on Oct. 2. Ghent released her debut album, “Boss,” only last year but is already emerging as one of the rising new talents in smooth jazz. Ghent’s originals, such as “Trust In You,” are funky and groove oriented, making them perfect for either listening or dancing, and there’s a nice selection of covers ranging from Bruno Mars to Roberta Flack in the repertoire as well. With her growing popularity it won’t be long before Ghent outgrows intimate venues like Humphrey’s – catch her while you can.

It may seem a bit early on a Sunday morning for a music fan to go out, but when it’s for a performance from Blaise Guld, the sacrifice is worth it. Appearing at Beaumont’s on Oct. 2, Guld is a charismatic performer, with a radio-friendly voice and an arsenal of original tunes, such as “Song On The Water,” which have enough of pop edge for Top 40 play. For this show he will be augmenting his repertoire with choice covers ranging from Bruno Mars and Rhianna to the Doors, making the perfect soundtrack for Beaumont’s brunch crowd.
