Last week, the front-page story told of the potential closing of the Scripps Library, the world’s only library dedicated solely to ocean science. The facility serves not only staff and students but also the community. My adjoining commentary, “The Scripps Library: legacy or lost forever?” (March 24, Page 6), will not be enough to convince UCSD administrators to funnel what would be a fraction of UCSD’s vast budget to keep this one-of-a-kind library open. The administrators are deeply sensitive to how they are perceived in the community. Please write and tell them you want the library to remain in operation, and you can be satisfied that you had a hand in securing this resource for yourself, your children, your grandchildren and the local, national and international oceanographic community. The following decision-makers hold the fate of the Scripps Library— its financial budget — in their hands: Marye Anne Fox, UCSD chancellor: [email protected] Suresh Subramani, Senior Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs: [email protected] Tony Haymet, Vice Chancellor of Marine Science: [email protected] Brian Schottlaender, University Librarian: [email protected] — Judith Lea Garfield is a La Jolla marine biologist and underwater photographer. She is the author of the regular “Tide Lines” column in the La Jolla Village News.
