PacWest Basketball Tournament comes to San Diego Point Loma Nazarene University will be the site of the second annual Pacific West Conference men’s and women’s basketball championships on March 6-8. The Sea Lions will welcome the top six teams on both the men’s and women’s side to compete for the automatic bid to the NCAA Regional Tournament.
Games will start on Thursday, March 6. The men’s games will tip off at 1 p.m. and 3:15 p.m., on both Thursday and Friday and the women will play at 5:30 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. The championships will be held on Saturday, March 8. The men’s game will start things off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the women at 7:45 p.m.

Boorman collects second straight PacWest Defender of the Week honor Point Loma senior forward Abby Boorman has been a top inside presence in the PacWest Conference since the calendar changed to 2014. Boorman claimed her second straight PacWest Defender of the Week honor in early February after two more dominating performances. First, she had seven blocks and eight rebounds in a win over Dominican (Calif.). She then capped off the week with a double-double, her fifth of the season, as she scored 13 points, pulled down 15 rebounds and blocked six shots against PacWest leaders Academy of Art.
Boorman leads the PacWest Conference with 3.4 blocks per game and has 1.4 blocks per game lead over second place. She is also third in the league with 8.9 rebounds per game and has averaged 11.5 rebounds so far in 2014. The Point Loma women’s basketball team is 10-9 on the season and 7-7 in the PacWest. PLNU will close out the season with five of its last six games at home, starting with Chaminade on Tuesday, Feb. 11 and Hawaii Pacific on Thursday, Feb. 13. Sheppard named PacWest Freshman of the Week Kellen Sheppard’s debut on the mound for Point Loma impressed more than just Sea Lion fans. It also caught the attention of the league, as Sheppard was selected as the Pacific West Conference Freshman of the Week for the week of Jan. 27-Feb. 2.
Sheppard pitched the second game of the series against Cal Poly Pomona and held the Broncos without a base runner for the first five innings, allowing one run through the first six. He finished the day with five strikeouts and four unearned runs allowed in 7.1 innings.
The Sea Lions will be at home four days this week before hosting San Diego Christian on Tuesday, Feb. 11 and then the University of British Columbia for a three-game series Feb. 13-15.
