Mayor Kevin Faulconer is seeking citizens interested in serving on the city’s Citizens’ Review Board on Police Practices (CRB).
The CRB is responsible for reviewing serious citizen complaints against San Diego police officers, officer-involved shootings and in-custody deaths. The Citizens’ Review Board’s role is to ensure the investigation and findings are accurate, thorough and objective. The CRB also reviews the administration of discipline in cases where the officer has been found to have disobeyed proper policy and procedure. The CRB makes policy and procedure recommendations to San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman.
The 23 members of the CRB reflect the diversity in San Diego, including ethnicity, race, geographic, occupation, gender, religion, sexual orientation and expression, socio-economic, people with disabilities and age. Board members should live within city limits. The time commitment for the CRB is extensive — about 20 hours per month — and includes case review, report writing, regular monthly meetings and continuing education. Applicants must undergo a background check.
Prospective members are selected by Faulconer and undergo training in preparation to serve. Board members are then appointed by Faulconer from the pool of prospective members when vacancies occur. Board members may serve up to eight one-year terms and serve at the pleasure of the mayor.
Informational meetings are scheduled throughout the city to provide information regarding the responsibilities of the board and time commitment and also to answer questions. Dates and time for informational meetings follow and can also be found by visiting www.sandiego.gov/citi-zensreviewboard.
• Monday, Sept. 22: 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Santa Fe Room/Balboa Park Club.
• Wednesday, Sept. 24: 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Logan Heights Branch Library.
• Monday, Sept. 29: 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Linda Vista Branch Library.
• Tuesday, Sept. 30: 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the University Branch Library.
• CRB open-session meeting (open to the public): Tuesday, Sept. 23, 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the College/Rolando Library, 6600 Montezuma Road.
If interested, provide a letter of interest and résumé to the mayor’s director of appointments or to Danell Scarborough, executive director of the citizens’ review board at [email protected].
