Cities seeking volunteers to advise new community choice energy program

San Diego Community Power (SDCP) is now taking applications for membership in a Community Advisory Committee that will provide citizen input and advice to the board of directors representing five cities: San Diego, Chula Vista, Encinitas, Imperial Beach, and La Mesa. SDCP is the regional entity created as a community choice energy program to put San Diego and participating cities on the path toward 100% renewable energy.
“San Diego is creating a regional clean energy program to power our communities, make rates competitive and create new green jobs for working families,” said San Diego Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer. “We’re encouraging San Diegans to join the effort and have their voices heard by applying to be on the Community Advisory Committee.”
San Diego is the largest American city to pursue a clean energy community choice program. SDCP has a goal of delivering power as soon as 2021.
“This new advisory committee will help guide and direct SDCP in developing an annual work plan and achieving our strategic goals,” said Cody Hooven, SDCP Interim Executive Officer and Chief Sustainability Officer for the City of San Diego. “It is crucial that we have a diverse representation of the cities we serve.”
Applicants to the SDCP Community Advisory Committee must be residents or business owners within one of the five member cities, or representatives of a community-based organization serving one or more of the cities. Two applicants from each member city will be nominated by their city’s respective board members.
“The creation of a community choice energy program has given our communities a seat at the table on energy decisions,” said City Councilmember Monica Montgomery, SDCP Board Member. “We are forming this Community Advisory Committee to ensure our residents are heard throughout the process as we develop a work plan for this organization.”
Nominees will be presented for board approval at the March 26 meeting. Applications are being accepted through Friday, Feb. 28. To review requirements and expectations, and to submit an application online through the San Diego Community Power webpage, visit sandiego.gov/sdcpadvisoryapp. For questions about the application process, call 858-492-6005 or [email protected].
