Chili cook-off: can you handle the heat?

A time-honored tradition in Ocean Beach, the annual chili cook-off brings the finest chili (and their chefs) together for an afternoon of beans and culinary delight on Saturday, June 26. Don’t miss your chance to sample (and judge) the best chili Southern California has to offer! The cook-off begins at lO a.m. (when the tickets go on sale). The actual tastings start at 11 a.m. at the grassy area at the foot of Newport Avenue and Abbott Street and will continue until the chili runs out (typically around 2:30 or 3 p.m.). An awards presentation will take place around 3:30 p.m. on the main stage. As a taster, you have a couple options. • You may purchase two individual chili samples for $1each; • or you may purchase a Peoples’ Choice ticket to sample all the teams’ chili for just $10. Proceeds from the chili cook-off tickets go to support the annual Fourth of July community fireworks show off the Ocean Beach Pier and beautification projects in OB. As a Peoples’ Choice judge, put your palate to the test! The official chili judges will judge based on the following criteria: • consistency; • tastes like chili; • color, looks like chili; • smells good like chili; and • meat (if used) — tenderness. Also be on the lookout for the hottest, best-decorated booth, best 92107 entry and the most spirited. Also, don’t forget! If the booths run out of chili, there is no reason to despair. Shades Oceanfront Bistro is proud — once again — to provide bowls of chili for the community fundraiser at the Committee Chili Booth inside the cook-off area. Dave’s secret recipe is one of the most popular, and sells out fast! Don’t miss your once-a-year chance to enjoy a bowl of delicious Shades chili! A $2 ticket gets you a bowl of the fabulous chili! Enjoy the beans and come back next year!!
