A number of local high school grads are seeing action on the collegiate sports scene this spring.
Columbia University senior Maia Chard-Yaron (La Jolla Country Day School) threw her first collegiate no-hitter, completing the Lions’ doubleheader sweep of Fairfield recently. Chard-Yaron faced the minimum over seven innings, striking out three and only allowing two walks, both of which were erased on the bases one batter later.
Chard-Yaron has also been getting it done at the plate, having hit safely in all six games during the week, extending her hitting streak to nine. From the leadoff spot, she batted .381 with four runs scored, two stolen bases, two sacrifices and an RBI, as Columbia went 4-1-1.
At Redlands (Calif.) University, Jeff Ponsford (La Jolla High) had three hits and two RBI’s in helping lead Redlands to a doubleheader sweep last weekend over University of La Verne. With the wins, Redlands raised its season record to 20-6.
Joe Oliveira (University City High) is a catcher for the University of Pacific baseball team.
Oliveira had four hits and an RBI to date for the Tigers, who posted a 17-11 record as of last weekend.
Eric Ruebens (La Jolla High) is a sophomore member of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) men’s tennis team.
The Tritons handed No. 32 Hawaii Hilo a convincing 9-0 loss recently at the Northview Tennis Courts on the UCSD campus. With the win, the Tritons improve to 9-8 overall and remain unbeaten against NCAA Division II foes this season with their 5-0 mark.
Kiki Kalkstein (La Jolla High) had a pair of goals to help lead California to a 19-7 rout of Saint Mary’s recently in women’s lacrosse. The Golden Bears scored a season-high goals total as they improved to 5-7.
Editor’s note: If you know of a Bishop’s School, La Jolla Country Day School, La Jolla High or University City High graduate playing collegiate sports this spring, e-mail: [email protected].
