The 19th annual Taste of the Peninsula/Peninsula “Chamber Chomp” returns Tuesday, April 22 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Several local restaurants around Shelter Island will participate in this event benefiting the Peninsula Chamber of Commerce.
“The Chamber Chomp is a great way for people from all over San Diego to get to know the unique community of Point Loma,” said Nikole Atterholm, board member of the Peninsula Chamber of Commerce. “The event provides an opportunity to spend time with family and friends and enjoy great food which supports the independent restaurants of Shelter Island.”
The Peninsula Chamber of Commerce promotes local business and serves Point Loma, Ocean Beach, Shelter Island, Harbor Island, Sports Arena and Midway. Proceeds from the Chamber Chomp go to support several chamber programs, including providing scholarships for Point Loma High School students, Fourth of July fireworks and various luncheons and mixers throughout the year.
Last year, about 500 people attended the restaurant walk ” both locals and out-of-town visitors ” bringing in about $2,500. The event also highlighted local businesses to provide a “win-win situation,” according to Atterholm.
Participating restaurants in the self-guided restaurant tour this year include:
“¢ Bali Hai
“¢ Old Venice
“¢ Red Sails Inn
“¢ Kona Kai Café
“¢ The Brigantine
“¢ Point Break Café
“¢ The Living Room
“¢ The Elegant Truffle
“¢ Gus’ Subs & Pizza
“¢ Blue Wave Bar & Grill
“¢ Stars & Stripes Mart
“¢ Bay Club Bar & Grill

New this year to the event is The Elegant Truffle, Point Loma’s newest chocolatier, which joins a host of seasoned Chamber Chomp veterans that have been participating in the popular local event from the beginning.
Bill Dargitz of the Red Sails Inn said his restaurant, with its trademark patio dining, will be offering its traditional array of appetizers including beer-battered shrimp, cheesy bread, chicken wings and potato skins.
Dargitz said he sees new people coming in to try the restaurant for the first time, but most are old friends that he has a great time catching up with.
Tickets are $15 and are available in several locations, including Union Bank and San Diego National Bank of Point Loma, Union 76 and Matt Kalla State Farm Insurance. The night of the event, tickets are available in the parking lot of The Brigantine until 6 p.m.
