Looking for something novel to do for your significant other on Valentine’s Day?
Consider treating them to a singing telegram, one presented by rock musicians no less.
Jeff Silverman, owner of Rockstar Singing Telegrams, started in Oregon several years ago. But his creative business model has proved so successful, it has since expanded all over the West Coast and the nation including San Diego.
“I sent my wife a Valentine’s Day singing telegram in 2009 and it was delivered by a quartet,” said Silverman. “I thought to myself, being a lifelong musician and ex-rock star, ‘Why isn’t there something cool like this (more) available?’ I thought, ‘There has to be something cooler than this.’ And there wasn’t.”
So Silverman put his own twist on telegrams starting Rockstar Singing Telegrams in his hometown. “After a number of years I expanded nationally,” he said. “And San Diego is one of my best markets.”
Silverman described doing singing telegrams as a “blast.”
“It’s so much fun to put a big smile on people’s faces, giving them an experience they’ll never forget,” he said. “We can do videos, or they can upgrade to a dozen roses if they like.”
Singing telegrams are delivered by professional musicians who play guitar and are dressed thematically for the event, whether it be a birthday or Valentine’s Day.
“Usually, they dress up in fun ’80s rock star outfits,” Silverman said. “But it’s very customizable. They can dress up classy and nice or country and western, etc.”
Typical romantic songs Silverman’s musicians serve up for Valentine’s Day include “You Are So Beautiful” by Joe Cocker, “How Sweet It Is” by James Taylor, or “Just The Way You Are” by Bruno Mars.
The rate for a Rock Star Telegram delivered by a musician is $199. “That comes with a song or two and a single rose and a balloon, or a chocolate for a guy,” said Silverman. “It’s just a shock-and-awe, five-minute piece of epicness. And we finish posing for some photos.”
