Since starring in beach volleyball at Point Loma High School, Charlie Ekstrom has made a name for herself on the national stage while becoming a leader on the Stanford University campus.

As a member of the Class of 2018 at PLHS, Ekstrom served as both class and ASB president and was named all-CIF, PLHS female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and AAU National Player of the Year, both in 2018, all while maintaining a 4.7 GPA.

She has continued her involvement at Stanford. On the Cardinal campus, she has served as founder and director of the Cardinal Community, a group for creating and providing community service opportunities for student-athletes while also serving as vice president of student affairs and president of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.

Ekstrom, 21, will graduate with a BS degree in architectural design this year and begin a master of arts program in communication and media studies.

But her real passion continues each time she steps onto the sand to join her Cardinal teammates.

Ekstrom, who stands 6 feet 1 inch tall, has collected an array of honors beginning with Pac-12 All-Freshman and All-Second Team honors in two seasons. Since her sophomore season, she has earned Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll status and was recently named All-American second team by the American Volleyball Coaches Association after posting a record of 23-11 for the No. 8 ranked Cardinal team that set a Stanford record for wins in a season.

With the 2021 season eliminated by COVID, Ekstrom will be able to play next season as a fifth-year “super senior” per NCAA rules.

Ekstrom’s parents are Tim and Merrilee Ekstrom of Point Loma.
