Carr accepts head women's job at Santa Clara

The Point Loma Athletic Department announced that coach Bill Carr has accepted the position of head women’s basketball coach at Santa Clara University.

“I want to thank Dr. Bob Brower, Dr. Caye Smith, Athletic Director Ethan Hamilton and everyone at Point Loma for my five wonderful years,” said Carr. “It was been a pleasure to work here and have the opportunity to coach so many terrific young men. I have nothing but fond memories of Point Loma.”

Carr has been with the Sea Lions for the past five seasons, posting a record of 80-64. He led Point Loma to the playoffs in four of his five seasons, including winning the 2013-14 National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association Championship. In addition, coach Carr claimed his 200th career victory as a head coach last season. He has a career record of 202-132.

“We are deeply appreciative for Bill’s efforts in leading our PLNU men’s basketball program these past five years and want to wish him the best in this new opportunity,” said Point Loma Athletic Director Ethan Hamilton. “We are extremely confident that we will continue to build on the foundation that has been laid both on and off the court these past few seasons.”

This will be the fourth head coaching stop for Carr, but the first on the women’s side. In addition to his time at PLNU, Carr was the head coach at Spring Hill from 1999-02 and at UC San Diego from 2004-07. He also has coaching stops as an assistant at the University of San Diego, Long Beach State and the University of San Francisco.

Carr takes over at Santa Clara for JR Payne, who recently accepted the head coaching job at the University of Colorado. PLNU will immediately begin a thorough search process to find its next head coach.
