Raul Campillo (pictured above left), City of San Diego District 7 Councilmember, announced recently that he has been appointed by the Speaker of the Assembly, Anthony Rendon, to the California Coastal Commission as an alternate to Commissioner Paloma Aguirre.

“I’m honored to have Speaker Rendon’s confidence to serve as Commissioner Aguirre’s alternate on the California Coastal Commission,” said Campillo. “The California Coastal Commission plays a vital role as stewards of the 840 miles of our beautiful California coastline, including 420 public beaches. The coast belongs to all of the people of California, and I am glad to support Commissioner Aguirre as her alternate to fiercely protect our environment, ensuring access to the Coast, and defending the rights of the workers who work in our coastal zone.”

The California Coastal Commission was established by voter initiative in 1972 (Proposition 20) and later made permanent by the Legislature through the adoption of the California Coastal Act of 1976. In partnership with coastal cities and counties, The Coastal Commission plans and regulates the use of land and water in the coastal zone. Development activities, which are broadly defined by the Coastal Act to include (among others) construction of buildings, divisions of land, and activities that change the intensity of use of land or public access to coastal waters, require a coastal permit from either the Coastal Commission or the local `government.

Campillo represents the Seventh Council District of the City of San Diego which includes: Allied Gardens, Del Cerro, Grantville, Linda Vista, Mission Valley, San Carlos, Serra Mesa, and Tierrasanta. He also serves as the Chair of the Economic Development & Intergovernmental Relations Committee.
