The Bird Rock Community Council (BRCC) wants to pull from the area’s culinary spirit and create a cookbook using favorite recipes from community members. Everyone, from former Bird Rock Elementary School students and staff to local merchants and residents, is being asked to submit recipes to be included in a new cookbook called “Tastes of Bird Rock.” “I think it would be a great community thing to do,” said Lorene LaCava, a kindergarten teacher at Bird Rock Elementary and one of the coordinators for the project. The only community cookbook LaCava can recall was organized by Bird Rock Elementary about 18 years ago. The committee is accepting recipes for appetizers, main dishes, drinks and desserts as well as any other dish that delights the palate. “My goal is to have it ready to publish Aug. 31,” said LaCava, who hopes to be selling the cookbooks this fall. The money raised from the sale of the books will be put toward a public art piece to honor past and present educators and staff at Bird Rock Elementary. LaCava noted that some of the school’s support staff have worked there for more than 20 years. “As a teacher, I’m standing on the shoulders of those who came before me,” LaCava said. LaCava is contributing her grandmother’s recipe for Southern pound cake, a family favorite. All recipes must be submitted by July 31. To submit a recipe, e-mail it along with name, contact information and affiliation with the seaside community to [email protected]. Recipes can also be submitted at www.typensave.com.
