Several local scholastic boys basketball teams have sunk wins in recent action.
The Bishop’s School and head coach Tom Tarantino have opened the season on a positive note. The team came into action this week at 12-3, with recent victories over Horizon, La Costa Canyon, Escondido, Hoover and Cathedral twice.
“Team defense and a balanced offense attack have been key to the team’s success,” Tarantino noted.
At neighboring La Jolla High, head coach Kamal Assaf and the Vikings recently saw action up north in San Francisco before returning to San Diego to resume play.
“We played in a competitive tournament at Marin Catholic in the San Francisco Bay area,” Assaf said. “We played well, although we won one game and lost three. Our highlight was beating Drake High School and taking Natomas-Sacramento, one of the top Division III schools in Northern California, to double OT before losing.”
According to Assaf, the Vikings are excited about the league season and look forward to playing their rivals in what should be one of the most competitive leagues in the county.
At La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) School, the Torreys dropped a 64-54 decision to Francis Parker last Friday, Jan. 5.
Four players hit double figures for LJCD, including Mark Schu (15 points ” five 3-point field goals), Travis Golia and J’Vonte Brooks (11 points each) and Kevin Ings with 10 points.
In earlier holiday tourney action, LJCD went 5-3 over the break, placing third in the Cornerstone Christmas Classic and fifth in the Paloma Valley Shootout.
Freshman Dennis Roth was named to the Cornerstone All-Tournament team while Ings received the honors in the Paloma Valley Shootout.
“We are really starting to come together, I think,” LJCD head coach Ryan Meier said. “Guys are understanding their roles, and everyone is committed to playing defense. I think we are performing better than I thought we would at this point. I still think we are only going to get better.”
University City High raised its record recently to 13-2 with a 58-38 victory over Lake Stevens, Wash., and a victory over visiting Clairemont on Jan. 5, 65-35.
