CIF basketball action tipped off last week with several local teams advancing.
On the girls side, The Bishop’s School placed five players in double figures, led by 19 points from Brianna Martinez, in rolling to a 78-20 victory over Imperial.
Bishop’s was to meet Mater Dei Catholic on Wednesday evening, with a berth in the CIF Division IV Finals at stake.
La Jolla Country Day School was also victorious in Division IV, rolling to a 71-30 win over Santa Fe Christian.
Ariana Elegado, Chemayne Shipley and Dominique Conners all notched 14 points apiece for the Lady Torreys.
LJCD was to meet Francis Parker on Wednesday night.
On the boys side, La Jolla rolled past its first two opponents in Division III action.
Senior center Peter Sefton and senior forward Matt Jones each scored 15 points in the paint in La Jolla’s easy 68-50 victory over Castle Park last week.
Senior guard Spencer Moyer tossed in 10 points, senior big man Ja’Rodd Watson powered inside for eight points, and senior Jerrell Agnew contributed seven points and six rebounds as the Vikings advanced to the CIF quarterfinals.
Friday night in the CIF quarterfinals at La Jolla, the Vikings crushed Mount Miguel, 66-39.
Sefton led the Vikings with 20 points and 10 rebounds. The balanced Viking attack included Moyer and Agnew with 11 points, and Jones with 10 points and five assists.
The Vikings met San Marcos in the CIF semifinals Feb. 26, winning 44-38 for a trip to the Division III Finals.
University City High also advanced in Division III play with victories over Valley Center (56-50) and Cathedral Catholic (60-48). David Washington paced the Centurions in both contests with 20 points. UC beat Saints Feb. 26, 85-83 in double OT.
In Division IV action, The Bishop’s School squeaked out a 57-53 win over Christian. Jywrell Wilson paced the Knights with 23 points.
Bishop’s met Army-Navy Jan. 26 in the semifinals and lost, 62-81. Army-Navy will go to the March 1 final.
