A new season of hardwood action for several local boys basketball teams means dreams of CIF gold.
At La Jolla Country Day School, the Torreys and head coach Ryan Meier were 16-12 a season ago, losing in the CIF quarterfinals.
Key players this winter for the Coastal League team look to include sophomores Dennis Roth, Jvonte Brooks and JT Kelley and freshman Ryan Watt.
“We are extremely young,” Meier noted. “It is a talented group, but experience and depth will be our biggest challenges in such a tough league.”
LJCD begins action on Dec. 5 versus Borrego Springs in the Small Schools Tournament.
La Jolla High and head coach Kamal Assaf finished 15-14 a season ago. The Vikings fell in the CIFs to eventual champ Mission Bay.
The Vikings return three starters in Spencer Moyer, Jerrell Agnew and Peter Sefton, along with sixth man Matt Jones from last year. La Jolla also has two talented newcomers from the junior varsity this year in Tyler Heap and Taylor Davis.
“This is our fourth year together with this veteran group,” Assaf noted. “We have a team who loves to compete whether they are playing on the football field, in the pool or on the volleyball court. In addition, they have worked very hard at preparing their bodies and minds for this special time, their senior year.”
Assaf believes the Vikings have a chance to be one of the best teams in the county and a strong contender for the Western League title and Division III CIF championship.
La Jolla will host Grossmont on Nov. 30.
The Bishop’s School went 21-9 last season, losing to Horizon in the CIF playoffs.
Bishop’s is scheduled to play tonight, Nov. 29, in the second round of the Eagle Vaquero Tournament.
