Cagers shoot for CIF glory this week

CIF basketball heats up for a number of area teams this week on the local hardwood.
On the boys side, La Jolla High (19-8, 10-2) clinched the Western League title last Thursday with a 56-48 win over Saints. The Vikings won the league crown outright for the first time since the 1988-’89 campaign.
In the win over Saints, Jerrell Agnew led the way with 19 points. Spencer Moyer tossed in 10 points, and Matt Jones worked inside with nine points and six blocked shots.
La Jolla is the top seed in Division III as CIF play opens this week.
The Bishop’s School finished at 20-8 (6-2 Coastal South League) with losses last week to Army Navy (60-48) and league champ Horizon (69-65). In the loss to Horizon, Jywrell Wilson tallied 34 points.
La Jolla Country Day School finished regular-season play at 6-16, (0-8, Coastal South League) with a 62-51 loss to Francis Parker last Thursday. Dennis Roth led the Torreys with 17 points.
Despite a losing record, the Torreys hosted Mater Dei Catholic in the first round on Tuesday night, Feb. 19 and won, 55-41.
On the girls side, La Jolla High finished the regular season at 9-16 (6-6 Western League) for head coach Ty Eveleth. La Jolla is the 13th seed and was to meet El Capitan in the first round as the Village News went to press Wednesday.
Key players recently have included Olivia Waldon and Ashley Fu on offense, and Sandra Harpster on the defensive side.
“It’s been an up-and-down season, but the girls are really coming together and we’ve been playing our best basketball down the stretch,” Eveleth said. “I think we’re ready to make a good showing in the playoffs.”
La Jolla Country Day School went unbeaten in the Coastal South League to finish at 8-0, with an overall mark of 20-5.
The Lady Torreys wrapped up regular season action last Thursday with a 58-45 win over Francis Parker, with Janae Fulcher leading the way with 20 points.
The Bishop’s School finished the regular season at 19-8 (5-3 Coastal South League) and placed second in the league behind La Jolla Country Day School.
In a 77-52 win over Horizon last Friday, Bishop’s placed five players in double figures, with Gizelle Studevant leading the way with 21 points.
