
Balanced leagues in which a number of teams knock off others seem to be the norm this season on the local scholastic basketball front.
On the girls side, La Jolla Country Day School came into play this week with an overall mark of 16-7, 4-1 in league action.
In play last week, LJCD beat Francis Parker on Friday, Feb. 2, by a 56-45 count and dropped a 49-48 decision to Horizon three nights earlier.
In the win over Francis Parker, LJCD placed four players in double figures. They included Lindsey Nettinga and Jamesha Townsend with 13 points each, Gizelle Studevent (12) and Dominique Conners (11).
Cathedral held La Jolla High to eight first-half points en route to an easy 65-26 victory at home last Friday. Alyssa Wilson paced the Lady Vikings with 13 points.
On the boys side, La Jolla High came into action this week sporting a 14-9 overall mark, 3-3 in Western League play.
The Vikings also recently dropped a 55-53 decision to University City (UC). In that contest, Andrew Heap led the team with 19 points, followed by Peter Sefton and Jerrell Agnew with 10 points apiece. Senior forward Brooks Dougherty and junior center Davy Hart scored 13 points apiece in a balanced UC effort.
La Jolla rebounded last Friday evening with a 68-55 road win versus Cathedral.
Agnew hit three 3-pointers in the first quarter on his way to 10 points on the night, and junior guard Matt Jones came off the bench to score seven of his 14 points in the second quarter to help put the Vikings up 35-25 at the half.
Spencer Moyer finished with 16 points and Sefton scored 10 points inside.
The Bishop’s School placed three scorers in double figures, but it wasn’t enough to avoid dropping a 58-51 decision to Horizon last Friday night. Bishop’s got 19 points from David Stotelmyre to lead the way.
Finally, La Jolla Country Day School went overtime before dropping a 39-37 decision to Francis Parker last Friday.
With the loss, LJCD fell to 14-9 (1-4 Coastal League) on the season.
