Volunteers needed for Red Shoe Day — Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego is getting ready for its annual Red Shoe Day fundraiser to raise funds to support families with a critically ill or injured child being treated at local hospitals. The organization is seeking volunteers to staff La Jolla intersections on the morning of June 27 to collect funds. Businesses, families, groups or individuals can form or join existing teams. Volunteers are asked to don festive attire and carry the foundation’s iconic red shoes as they collect cash donations from La Jollans on their morning commute. To register as a volunteer or establish a personal fundraising page, visit www.RMHCSD.org/RedShoeDay. City leaders urge businesses to hire youth — Mayor Bob Filner and City Council President Pro Tem Sherri Lightner teamed together to urge local businesses to hire young adults for summer jobs at jobs summit and business roundtable in late May. The city leaders are embracing the local employment program, CONNECT2Careers, an innovative program designed to provide opportunities for young people to help them hone skills that give them a leg up in their post-college job searches. The program helps place recent graduates into jobs in tourism, defense and innovation. Filner and Lightner said they hope to help place all 400 applicants in local jobs this summer through the program. For more information, visit c2csd.org. Fitwall studio opens in La Jolla — A new kind of fitness studio recently opened its doors at 7710 Fay Ave. Fitwall’s training concept uses an apparatus designed to activate muscles, balance the body, burn calories and decompress the spine. The cutting-edge technology is matched with fitness experts who help athletes train using the veritcal training modalityin 40-minute sessions. For more information, visit www.fitwall.com.
