La Jollan reaches out through Lux
The Lux Art Institute, 1550 S. El Camino Real, will be able to improve after La Jollan Terri Zimdars made a donation of $250,000 for the capital campaign to help fund the Lux Artist Pavilion.
“Terri was introduced to Lux through our community event Family Days,” said Kristin Bronowocki, Lux marketing assistant. “She enjoyed the event and our unique valises so much that she got in contact with our director Reesey Shaw and decided to fund our artist pavilion.”
The first facility, currently under construction above the San Elijo Lagoon in Encinitas, will house the institute’s artist-in-residence program.
The pavilion will open to the public this fall.
“We will invite artists to create artworks in the Lux studio and live on site, giving visitors the opportunity to watch art being made and experience the creative process firsthand,” Bronowocki said. “Zimdars’ donation brings Lux closer to funding this first facility and her generosity has extended far beyond the financial, as Zimdars has also become an avid volunteer for our events.”
The Lux Art Institute’s next Free Family Days event will take place on Sunday, April 22, from 1 to 4 p.m.

Pioneer’s progress
Webster K. Cavenee, Ph.D., has been awarded the National Foundation for Cancer Research’s Albert Szent-Gyorgyi Prize for Progress in Cancer Research, which includes a $25,000 honorarium.
Cavenee, director of the San Diego branch of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research and a member of UCSD’s Moores Cancer Center, provided the first genetic evidence for tumor suppressor genes.
