National focus shines on La Jolla
Three professors in the fields of chemistry, medicine and physics from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), 9500 Gilman Drive, were recently elected to the National Academy of Sciences.
Receiving one of the highest honors in science are Mark H. Thiemens, dean of the Division of Physical Sciences; Don W. Cleveland, a professor of medicine, neurosciences, and cellular and molecular biology at UCSD’s School of Medicine; and Jose N. Onuchic, co-director of the Center for Theoretical Biological Physics.
“You know it is a great feeling and it is such a long process, like a year or two, and you are being evaluated by the very best people in your field, and so to be recognized in such a way is a very nice thing,” Thiemens said.
The three join 63 other professors at UCSD who are either currently serving or have been named in the past to the National Academy of Sciences, which was founded by Congress in 1963 to serve as an official adviser to the federal government on matters of science and technology.

C-3 holds annual awards presentation
Citizens Coordinate for Century 3 (C-3) will be holding its annual awards presentation at the Bahia Resort Hotel on Sunday, May 21. C-3 is an organization made up of San Diegans concerned with the future of the city’s urban planning. Since 1961, it has been an important influence in San Diego’s architectural growth and attempts to ensure that the city develops in ways that best suit the environment as well as its people.
Many C-3 members are architects and civic leaders who have a hand in growth planning for the city of San Diego. The awards presentation this month will honor the members of C-3 who have distinguished themselves in their contribution to quality urban planning. Among honorees are Tom Carter,Shannon Bradley, Senator Jim Mills, Vicki Estrada and Bud Fischer.
C-3 will also be introducing a new award at this year’s presentation in honor of late member Hamilton Marston. The Marston family recently established a grant for C-3 that will help the organization continue its mission into the next decade.
The awards presentation will begin at 12:30 p.m., followed by lunch at 1 p.m. The cost is $35 for members and $40 for guests. The Bahia Hotel is located at 998 W. Mission Bay Drive.
