UCSD’s Doughty to be honored by YWCA
The YWCA Tribute to Women (TWIN) will award Linda R. Doughty, director of the California Student Opportunity and Access Program (Cal-SOAP), its highest honor for outstanding achievements in her profession during a ceremony on Friday, June 27, at 11:30 a.m., at the San Diego Convention Center.
“I feel honored to be celebrated for my efforts in helping K-12 students pursue college, and this award validates that UCSD is committed to diversity,” Doughty said. “I was a first-generation, low-income student, and since junior college, I realized that I could be a motivator for others to achieve in education.”
The TWIN awards, which were initiated in 1990, will host a luncheon that will raise money for YWCA’s programs and services for women and families who have become victims of domestic violence.
“I hope this award brings education to the forefront and highlights Cal-SOAP, which has been in existence in San Diego for almost 30 years,” Doughty said. “This award also highlights that we must do a better job of preparing students for postsecondary options.”

CCDC feted for role in Balboa revamp
Centre City Development Corporation (CCDC), the city’s downtown development arm, was honored last month with a 2008 People in Preservation award on behalf of the Save Our Heritage Organisation (SOHO), as well as with a Historic Preservation Award for Architectural Restoration from the City of San Diego Historic Resources Board, for the restoration of the Balboa Theatre.
The awards lauded CCDC’s attention to detail in restoration of artwork, the color scheme, the 600-light vertical marquee sign and more at the 1,300-seat venue, 868 Fourth Ave. Originally opened in 1924, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The $26.5 million restoration was finished in January.
