For the Mission Bay High boys’ basketball team, the post-season dream continued into this week, with the Bucs hitting the road for a state playoff match-up.
Following a pair of recent wins in CIF Open Division action, the Bucs qualified for the state playoffs this week, where they were to take on sixth-seeded Santa Margarita (March 9, after press time) in an opening-round game. Mission Bay went into the game as the 11th seed, sporting a record of 21-8.
According to head coach Dennis Kane, the Bucs will get a stern test from host Santa Margarita.
“Santa Margarita is a traditionally strong team in Orange County. They have played a tough schedule against some good opponents which belies their 17-11 record,” Kane commented. Recent CIF action saw the Bucs top Army-Navy (66-57) and Poway (72-68), with a 53-49 loss to Saints.
According to Kane, Mission Bay’s Justin Moore played great ball against Poway, while teammate Armstrong Ojunkwu had a solid performance against Army-Navy. Ojunkwu also exhibited consistent play throughout the playoffs, according to his head coach.
Meantime, Mission Bay High’s other winter sports teams have called it a season, with a number of them in rebuilding mode this year.
