Bodhi Tree Concerts presents Gilbert and Sullivan’s ‘Trial by Jury’ in Point Loma

Bodhi Tree Concerts closes its sixth season with Gilbert and Sullivan’s operetta “Trial by Jury” at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 24 at All Souls’ Episcopal Church, 1475 Chatsworth Blvd. A free reception with the artists will follow. Tickets cost $20 (students and military $10) and may be purchased at bodhitreeconcerts.org or at the door.
All proceeds will benefit the local nonprofit Immigration Justice Project of San Diego.
As with most Gilbert and Sullivan operas, the plot of “Trial by Jury” may be ludicrous but the characters behave as if the events were perfectly reasonable. This one-act satire poking fun at the legal profession includes pointed barbs aimed at the hypocrisy of those in authority, as well as the sometimes base motives of supposedly respectable people and institutions. Sounds like a perfect escape from today’s news… or is it maybe too close for comfort?
Bodhi Tree’s annual romp through the Gilbert and Sullivan canon comes with a bonus second half featuring favorite Gilbert and Sullivan choruses, with the audience encouraged to sing along. Although silly in content, this concert will benefit an important, timely, and local cause: The Immigration Justice Project (IJP). The mission of the IJP is to promote due process and access to justice at all levels of the immigration and appellate court system, through the provision of high-quality pro bono legal service for those in immigration proceedings in San Diego.
Sing along with the hilarious proceedings and local stars, featuring Michael Sokol (The Judge), Enrique Toral (The Defendant), Caroline Nelms (The Plaintiff), and Walter DuMelle (The Usher).
