Sometimes, it really is hard to say goodbye
They say goodbyes are never easy. But that just isn’t always true. For instance, I’m sure most inmates leaving their cells for the last time are pretty happy to say, “Sayonara!” Mostly though, goodbyes are difficult. They can be some of the saddest times humans experience. This week I said goodbye to the beach house I’ve been living in for the last nine months. My lease is up, summer vacationers with big bucks are on their way and I’ve got to go. I’ve been filled with anxiety the last several weeks just thinking about leaving this quaint little house in Mission Beach. This was my first experience living on the beach and there have been so many great times during my relatively short stay here, like looking out my window in the morning and scoping the waves for a potential surf session. Or there was hopping on my bike and cruising the boardwalk for a quick ride or a long excursion along the bay and beyond. But most of all, what makes this little community such a special place are the people. I have met and befriended some of the kindest, most insightful and most genuine people in this little pocket of gold. Just a few of them include the many really cool and sympathetic business owners who dot the coast from the Big Dipper all the way to Tourmaline. Then there are the wise old locals with all their stories about how this town has grown up and inevitably changed for better or worse. There is the multitude of searching souls who come here from all over the country and the world in search of a better life who add to the ambiance and diversity of the beach. And I can’t forget about the surfers with their predominantly laid-back attitude mixed with a zest and never-ending longing for the sea. Yes, I will definitely miss it here. Oh yeah, one more thing. Did I mention the sunsets aren’t too shabby either?
