Members of the Airport Land Use Commission for the County of San Diego met with the community Tuesday in University City to discuss future use for land around Marine Corps Air Station, Miramar.
This is the culmination of a public review process that began in November 2005 to discuss appropriate land use around MCAS Miramar, said Sandi Sawa of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority.
“We have no jurisdiction on what happens on the base,” said Keith Wilschetz of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority. “This whole process is for looking at future developments around the base.”
“There are four factors for Miramar: safety, overflight, airspace protection and noise,” Sawa said.
For example, if officials from the base told the board that because of the helicopters’ flight patterns a crash would be likely to occur in a certain place, they would recommend against constructing a school there, Sawa said.
In areas where noise levels rise, Sawa said future homeowners may need to sign an easement saying they are aware of the high decibels. Flight patterns “” or overflight “” may determine certain uses for land, and Sawa said the board will recommend protecting air space by limiting building height.
“Our goal is to protect people in the air and protect people on the ground if something happens,” she said.
Additionally, the group said it wants to protect people from noisy situations and to make sure that future homebuyers are aware of their proximity to a military installation.
Public comment continues until the end of May. Citizens can find the draft environmental impact report online at www.san.org.
Any comments can be e-mailed to [email protected]. The general number for the airport authority is (619) 400-2400.
