Blood donations needed to benefit victims of Hurricane Dorian

The American Red Cross is hosting two blood donation events in La Jolla to benefit victims of Hurricane Dorian. The first donation is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20 at UC Thornton Hospital, 9300 Campus Point Drive. The second is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27 at the University California San Diego Library Walk, 9500 Gilman Drive. Hurricane Dorian forced blood donation centers to close and blood drives to cancel. According to the Red Cross, that caused planned blood and platelet donations to go uncollected. “When blood donations are disrupted in a region of the country, the Red Cross is able to move blood donations where they are needed most,” Red Cross officials said in a statement. To donate, eligible donors must be 17 or older, weigh at least 110 pounds, and be in good health. Eligible donors must also have a blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification at check-in. To schedule an appointment or to learn more, download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org, or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
