Bishop’s seniors have once again shown their academic abilities, with a total of 15 students, out of a class of 138 students, named semifinalists in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Competition.
The Bishop’s seniors who earned semifinalist status this year are: Anna Acker (La Jolla), Hamilton Allport (La Jolla), Thomas Bao (La Jolla), Kevin Chen (La Jolla), Ryan Feng (La Jolla), Samuel Fu (La Jolla), Christina Gaffney (La Jolla), Gabriel Garon (Carmel Valley), William Griffith (La Jolla), Rachel Hong (La Jolla), Linette Pan (Carmel Valley), Anna Szymanski (La Jolla), Alexandra Tsai (La Jolla), Justin Wang (Carmel Valley) and Joseph Wu (La Jolla).
Approximately 16,000 National Merit Semifinalist students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise in the 62nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth about $33 million that will be offered next spring.
Approximately 90 percent of semifinalists are expected to advance to the finalist level and it is from this group that all National Merit Scholarship winners will be chosen. Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous college studies.
More than 1.6 million juniors in over 22,000 high schools entered the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
The Bishop’s School is a coeducational college preparatory independent day school consisting of grades six through 12. Founded in 1909, the school is located in La Jolla and affiliated with the Episcopal Church. The 2016-2017 enrollment is 800 students who live throughout San Diego County.
