Winning boys water polo gold at The Bishop’s School has pretty much been the norm over the years. In fact, the Knights have hoisted the gold seven times.
The Knights under veteran head coach Jim Fales went 26-6 last fall en route to their fifth consecutive CIF crown. Bishop’s was also 2006 Western League co-champs.
Key returnees this fall include seniors Zealand Hoover, Robbie Chapman, Cyrus Mojdehi and Sam Fiske; and juniors Scotty Siegel, Billy Tifft, Demian Tschirn and Justin Wolfe.
“With the loss of two high school All-American players from the ’06 squad, this team will rely on a more balanced attack,” Fales noted. “They are excited about the opportunity and are ready to compete for a record sixth straight CIF championship title.”
Bishop’s opened play last Friday with Santa Margarita.
Meantime, La Jolla Country Day School surfaces with new head coach Steve Traverso this season. The Torreys finished 11-11-1 last year for fifth place in the Eastern League, losing to Bishop’s in CIF.
LJCD will look to senior Greg Wisenberg and junior Henry Clausner to lead the way this fall.
“I am coming into my first season at Country Day optimistic,” Traverso said. “We have a very young group of kids that have never seen the game before. I believe with the conditioning we are doing, combined with the game experience, the boys are going to learn fast. I have a talented group of freshmen that are going to turn into a strong team in a few years. I am very excited to see what this group is going to accomplish in their four years. We have a tremendous amount of support through the school.”
