SDHS reminds pet parents to take care of animals during freeze warning

With a freeze warning in effect across San Diego until Thursday morning, San Diego Humane Society reminds pet owners to take extra care of their pets during cold weather.
San Diego Humane Society recommends the following tips to keep animals safe:
1. Keep pets indoors during times of extreme temperatures.
2. Give pets plenty of food. Pets may need more food in the winter to generate energy and keep warm.
Consult with your veterinarian to determine a healthy diet for your pet.
3. Provide horses and other livestock with a windbreak, cover, warm bedding, abundant high-quality feed and fresh water.
4. Parked cars attract feral cats and small animals who may crawl up under the hood looking for warmth. To avoid injuring any hidden animals, bang on your car’s hood to scare them away before starting your engine.
5. Use caution with antifreeze – it’s poisonous to pets. Contact your vet immediately if you think your pet has consumed antifreeze.
6. Watch out for signs of frostbite and hypothermia: Ice on body and limbs, shivering, weakness, skin that is bright red followed by pale color to black color. Seek vet care immediately if these signs occur.
