Mesa College to host native planting event

On Sunday, Sept. 15, from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the Organic Garden, San Diego Mesa College, San Diego Audubon and the California Native Plant Society’s San Diego Chapter are teaming up to install a native plant demonstration garden at Mesa College. The event is free and members of the public are invited to participate in this planting, learn about plants that are native to our area, and obtain resources about how to install native plants (tools and gloves will be provided). Free packets of native seeds will also be provided, and there will be an opportunity to purchase additional native plants.
The idea came to life when Mesa College alumnus and San Diego Audubon advocate Sammy Flohr (2019) brought together TerraMesa (San Diego Mesa College’s Environmental Sustainability and Conservation Club), the San Diego Audubon Society, and the San Diego Chapter of the California Native Plant Society to create a native plant habitat to support local bird and pollinator species.
During the event, volunteers will augment the existing Native Plant Garden next to the P100 building and create a native plant habitat in the wooded area near the Food2Soil compost hub and TerraMesa garden plots. SD Audubon, the CNPS, Food2Soil, the SD Pollinator Alliance, and HELIX Environmental Planning will have booths set up at the event for attendees to learn more.
In the future, Audubon will install signage to identify plant species, explain the benefits of native plants, and provide information about Audubon and the California Native Plant Society.
