Jason Mraz to collaborate with local dance groups in new musical

Two-time Grammy Award-winning singer Jason Mraz will debut the first musical of his career, “Shine,” on Feb. 15 and 16, 2020, at the Spreckels Theatre.

Mraz’s songs will serve as a score to the musical. Additionally, several local nonprofit arts and arts education groups will collaborate with the singer in the production. These nonprofits include Malashock Dance and transcenDANCE, which are both based in Liberty Station.

Malashock Dance makes dance accessible for underserved students, low-income families, and dancers with disabilities. Similarly, transcenDANCE helps young dancers in underserved San Diego communities to transcend borders, expand artistic ambitions, and create positive change through dance and performance.

Both dance groups have been beneficiaries of the nonprofit Jason Mraz Foundation, which promotes inclusive arts education and the advancement of equality with the goal of causing world peace.

At the beginning of his career, Mraz moved to Oceanside; and his time spent in San Diego has been a great influencer of his music. He is known for his singer-songwriter vibe, but before Mraz became popular in the coffee shop scene, he was involved in musical theater throughout high school and college. In 2017, Mraz even went on to star opposite Sara Bareilles on Broadway in her acclaimed hit musical “Waitress.”

“Shine” is a tribute to San Diego; its plot follows Mraz and a group of his friends during a day of exploring the city.

Tickets will be available starting Sept. 6 at 10 a.m. at jasonmraz.com. Tickets range from $49.50 and $119.50 each. Proceeds will go to the Jason Mraz foundation. To learn more, visit jasonmraz.com.
