BREAKING: PLNU cancels classes on account of threat

Today at 8:30 a.m. (Oct. 25), Point Loma Nazarene University sent out a text alert to students that “all classes are canceled for the rest of the day.” PLNU officials say they received information from the FBI about a possible threat to the campus and its resident students. As a result, and “out of an abundance of caution,” the university urged students to stay in their dorms or leave campus and “all non-supervisory employees are dismissed. All services are closed.” However, those who evacuate will not be allowed back on campus until further notice according to PLNU’s Public Safety.
“We figured it was better for us just to stay put,” says PLNU senior Whitney Byrd, who elected to remain at her dorm on campus. “Because, if we leave, they won’t let us back in for who knows how long.”
According to a post at 9:30 a.m. by student Meg Tyndall O’Hearn on Point Loma Connections’ Facebook page, an unknown individual “threatened to shoot his ex-girlfriend,” who is allegedly a student at the university. O’Hearn goes on to write that there’s heavy traffic on Lomaland, making it difficult for those who wish to leave.
“The only thing the department can disclose is that it was an online threat,” San Diego police Lt. Eric Hays said in a statement.
While there have been two reported shootings over the last year in Point Loma’s neighborhood according to the CBS News 8 website, PLNU recently Tweeted an update that there have been “no injuries and no reported incidents on campus or within the Point Loma neighborhood” for this current threat.
While the FBI continues to investigate, PLNU is working with both the FBI and SDPD. This is a developing story. Refresh this page for updates.
