Rising 90 feet over Mission Bay, SeaWorld’s historic Bayside Skyride celebrated its 50th anniversary on Friday, June 23. The skyride opened in 1967 as the Atlantis Skyride and transported riders to the Sea World Atlantis Restaurant. It was the first ride constructed at SeaWorld San Diego and was built by the Von Roll company. The ride has provided more than 20 million park guests scenic views on classically designed gondolas that glide across nearly 3,000 feet of cable high above Mission Bay. At the time of its construction it was the longest span of any skyride and the remains the only one that travels over a body of salt water. Five decades later, it stands as only one of 11 operating Von Roll type 101 gondola rides in the United States and one of 18 worldwide. It is the oldest gondola lift in California.
