Beach & bay events: July

July 9-10/July 16-17 Plenty of fun in the sun is on tap during the 58th annual Old Mission Beach Athletic Club’s (OMBAC) Over the Line competition on the sands of Fiesta Island. The sport is a three-person, ball-and-bat contest matching the skills of 3,900 athletes. It will take place from 7 a.m. to dusk on two weekends: July 9-10 and again on July 16-17. The festive event with colorful team names is expected to attract about 55,000 sun-baked spectators. For more information, visit ombac.org/over_the_line. Sundays The ninth annual Pacific Beach Concerts on the Green series, presented by the Pacific Beach Town Council and the Pacific Beach Community Foundation, is about to get under way. The four-week concert series takes place on Sundays from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at Kate O. Sessions Park. The 2011 concert series lineup includes: • July 24 — Blue Breeze Band: Mo-town, R&B, soul, funk and jazz • July 31 — Stoney B Blues Band: Blues • Aug. 7 — Candy Kane with Sue Palmer: Boogie Woogie and blues • Aug. 14 (sponsored by Cymer) — Three Chord Justice: premiere country band, winner of the 2010 KSON Country Showdown For more information, visit www.pbconcerts.org. Going on now SeaWorld San Diego has opened its “One Ocean” attraction spotlighting SeaWorld’s majestic killer whales as ambassadors of the sea, and the ocean as the center of the natural world. The show features spectacular whale behaviors, including thrilling high-energy leaps and multiple whales performing simultaneously. The whales interact in new ways with trainers, the audience, each other, and even the set itself. In one segment, the whales play amid giant fountains. “One Ocean” replaced the popular “Believe,” a show that enjoyed a five-year run in all three SeaWorld parks. The new show premiered at SeaWorld Orlando on April 22 and SeaWorld San Antonio on June 10. For information, visit www.seaworldparks.com/one-ocean. Saturday, July 9 Nature lovers can do their part for the environment around them with a work party at neighboring Famosa Slough on Saturday, July 9. The event gives participants a chance to take care of California native plants and remove invasive plants. The event runs from 9 a.m. to noon. Participants are asked to meet at the southeast corner of West Point Loma Boulevard and Famosa Boulvard. For more information, call (619) 224-4591, or visit www.famosaslough.org. Sept. 24 Surfers will paddle into the lineup at Mission Beach and catch waves for charity on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 7 a.m.. More than 100 board riders will support the Boys to Men Mentoring Network by attempting to catch 100 waves in just 12 hours. Participants will receive Nixon watches, T-shirts, breakfast from Souplantation, massages and more. Surfers are tasked with raising $1,000 in pledges to enter the event. The event takes place on the sand at San Fernando Court. Parking is available in south lot of Belmont Park. San Fernando Court is the first street south of Belmont Park. For more information, visit www.boystomen.org and www.100wave.org.
