They just keep getting better. Both Marissa and Brianna Bartello again set personal records and moved up the Point Loma women’s track and field team’s all-time top 10 list. On May 8 they did it at the Oxy Invitational as the Sea Lions look to secure spots in the NCAA Championships.
Marissa Bartello improved her NCAA Provisional Standard time in the 3k steeplechase to 10:43.77. She moved up to 18th place in the country. She has the top time in the PacWest Conference by 4.41 seconds. Bartello improved upon the previous Point Loma school record in the steeplechase by 42.77 seconds this season as the freshman from Laguna Hills, Calif., new PR each of the five times she ran the race this season.
Brianna Bartello moved up to seventh place in school history in the 1500m with a time of 4:39.38. She improved her previous personal record by 1.37 seconds and climbed into 42nd place in NCAA Division II.
She was not the only Sea Lion to represent PLNU in the 1500m. Alex Hernandez finished right behind Bartello in the third heat with a time of 4:39.81. It was not her PR in the event but her time of 4:39.46 from earlier in the season has her ranked ninth in school history. Josie Frye registered a time of 5:00.44 in the same event.
Thanks to her provisional mark, Marissa Bartello will now wait to see if she will get the invite to the NCAA Championships on May 26 to 28 in Bradenton, Fla. The announcement will be made on May 17 at 3 p.m.
