
A 25-year-old male suspect was driving his car in a reckless manner in a business parking lot about 9:15 p.m. on Feb. 2. A 40-year-old male (victim 1) and a 41-year-old male (victim 2) were walking in the parking lot and almost got hit by the suspect. At some point the suspect got out of his car with a machete and started to swing it at the victims. Victim 1 was struck in the forehead by the machete and sustained a non life threatening cut. Victim 2 was struck on the nose and sustained a minor cut. The victims were able to hold the suspect down until police arrived. Ian Smigels was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and DUI. Victim 1 was transported to the hospital and victim 2 declined to go to the hospital. San Diego Police Western Division Detectives are investigating.
