Arts District Liberty Station Collaborative Grant recipients announced

The NTC Foundation has announced the first recipients of its Arts District Collaborative Grant designed to engender collaboration among the district’s resident arts and culture groups. Grants ranged from $2,500-$5,000. A total of $20,000 was awarded to five new projects to advance the work of the groups, engage the community, and further help transform the historic 100-acre former Naval Training Center site into a thriving arts and culture destination for the community. “The Arts District was founded in 2000 to enrich the lives of San Diegans by renovating 26 historic buildings at the former Naval Training Center to so that the general public can experience the arts, culture and creativity of the San Diego region,” said NTC Foundation executive director Alan Ziter. “With 17 buildings renovated and 100 percent occupied, the NTC Foundation is now in a position to provide grants and encourage our tenants to work together to create community programs.” The following organizations and events were selected for the 2019 grants. Applications for future granting will be available in September. Filmmersion presented by San Diego Filipino Cinema In collaboration with: the New Americans Museum and The Lot. Dates: Workshop March 9-10. March 27 screening.

The San Diego Filipino Cinema in association with the New Americans Museum will host Filmmersion – a three-day film immersion workshop .The best three short films will be selected to be shown at The Lot prior to the showing of “The Women of The Weeping River.” Spring in the Arts In collaboration with: Recreational Music Center, Monart School of Art and The Lot. Dates: March 25-29, community activity April 13, noon to 3 p.m.

Info: monartsandiego.com/spring_camps.html. Spring into the Arts is a collaborative camp that will offer a five-hour camp experience for kids ages 4-14. The camp will conclude with a showcase of what they learned at The Lot. The showcase will allow for the public to view their work on the big screen, while also enjoying music by Recreational Music Center. Live Arts Fest Dates: April 3-7 and April 11-14 at 7:30 p.m. Location: White Box Live Arts.

Dance-makers and five visual artists from Arts District Liberty Station work collaboratively to inspire each other for the annual Live Arts Fest; creating original images for projection. The artists and dance-makers worked together, holding collaborative meetings and using the descriptions of the intended work from the dance-makers to serve as a point of inspiration. First Friday Performance In collaboration with: DanzArts with guest Emilio Ochando and San Diego Dance Theater. Date: Oct. 4.

DanzArts La Esencia Flamenca Dance Company will be hosting world renowned and award-winning flamenco dancer, Emilio Ochando. A free Flamenco workshop will take place and be open to the public. Prior to performance, attendees will have an opportunity to meet Ochando during a reception 5:30 to 7 p.m. with a free demonstration of his work and a history of flamenco at Dorothea Laub Dance Place. Summer Solstice featuring art, music, dance and dining In collaboration with: Visual and performing artists, businesses and restaurants in the Arts District. Dates: June 21-23. Location: Varied locations around Arts District Liberty Station. Info: libertystation.com/do/summer-solstice-2019. A three-day weekend of visual and culinary experiences to awaken your senses to the summer sun. The celebration begins Friday evening and runs through Sunday evening. The sunny daytime hours will be filled with public art participation and special events found in and around the Arts District’s more than 25 artist studios, to live music, dance performances and yoga in the lawn. The evening hours are focused on indulging the taste buds and dining under the stars at one of the many top rated restaurants’ patios. The Sunday night finale will be Conge? the “ArtGastro Progressive Dinner of a Lifetime!” Dinner guests will progress through three courses served at Veltz Fine Art, Solare Ristorante and MK Envision Galleries, with celebrity chef Flor Franco and executive chef Filippo Piccini. Tickets go on sale March 28 at palettexevents.com.
