Annual poetry contest calls for entries
Deadline for submissions to the 20th annual Amy Marie Watkins Memorial Poetry Prize contest is Monday, April 16.
The contest, hosted by La Jolla Country Day School, is held in honor of Watkins, a former student and poet who died in an automobile accident in 1987 at age 17.
All California high school students, grades nine though 12, are eligible to submit two entries. First-place prize is $100 and runner-up receives $75. Winners will be notified in early June and their names will be posted on the school’s Web site.

Slick to show her art
Grace Slick, lead singer of the Jefferson Airplane in the heyday of San Francisco’s psychedelic music scene, will show her latest art at Wentworth Gallery, 1025 Prospect St.
Slick will make a special appearance at three receptions: Friday and Saturday, March 30-31, from 6 to 9 p.m.; and Sunday, April 1, from noon to 3 p.m.
A member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Slick also sang with Jefferson Starship, which then became just Starship. She retired from music in 1989 to devote her time to visual arts.
Her paintings include portraits of music pals such as the late Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead, Sting, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix and others. She also paints in a Japanese brush style with black ink. For more information, call (858) 551-7071.
