Artists’ Alley puts finest creations, handmade goods at the fingertips

Truly a feast for the senses, the Ocean Beach Street Fair is a wonderful place to see and purchase art of all kinds. Artists’ Alley has become one of the annual street fair’s most popular areas, with so much interest from the public and the artists that this component of the festival doubled in space last year and this year. Now running along two whole blocks of Bacon Street on either side of Newport Avenue, 74 artists will participate this year, selected by a juried process. Only handcrafted and unique items are included, with additional activities set to include art demonstrations and interactive activities like painting and children’s craft making. Visitors to Artists’ Alley will be able to find a broad range of items, from the practical to the whimsical: purses, hats, jewelry, hair barrettes, paintings, sculpture, photography, ceramics and even fitness hula hoops. Just about any medium with which an artist might choose to create is likely to be found among the booths. Liz Greene, creative director of the Ocean Beach MainStreet Association, said the area is a mini art festival in itself, which sells out its space well in advance of the festival. “It’s a really lively part of the event,” Greene said. “People who participate in Artists’ Alley create whatever they’re selling by hand themselves. So, it’s a real unique component of the fair. “We do have other booths throughout Newport Avenue that have some handmade things or there are people who might be selling other people’s handmade things,” she said. “And then, of course, we have sunglass and straw hat people and so on. But this area is strictly for the people who make a living by supporting themselves though their artwork.”
